Here is my latest animation, in a way to improve my show-reel, as I was more versed in 2D animation than 3D.
The model+texture are from Xtrm3D (christophe Desse)
I did the rigg+animation+lighting and the compositing.
As an animator, I wanted to make an acting scene, with a heavy atmosphere and mood. The character had to give the feeling that she thinks... ... I hope I've achieved this.
The line of dialogue, is from the last part of Joan of Arc (from Besson), when she becomes kind of "pertubed", wich seemed to fit.
I hope you will enjoy !
You will find 2 versions:
A rendered one :

And an "Open GL" one, for those who care just about the animation :p

Thanks for taking the time to answer ScatteredLogical,
I'm agree with you about lip sync issue. I spent a hell of time on this animation, trying to get all the aspect ""perfect"" (cloths, body movements, gestures, lips...), but I noticed that too...when I look back, once it was finished later on.
About how far the mouth of the girl can be open, well there is no limit. She was speaking so fast, that I had the feeling her jaw was popping "up and down" when I was trying to "show" the sound, and I thought it will be distractive, so I tempered a bit the amplitude (damn it) "...but more importantly the mouth seems to move at a slower opening/closing pace than the dialogue...", I agree again, I don't know how I let this happen  ...I think i didn't have enough "step back", I've been to much "in" it.
But I realize now that it could be improve... those mistakes will teach me for next animation, believe me, I'll be a complet maniac.
For the arms that seems to have a bit of lag behind it, like when she suddenly turn back or stop walking ? Well, here it was a choice, I tought it will bring more realism, a different way of moving (sort of "disorganize")... compare to someone less frantic, well, I mean...that's why I tryed.
I did this animation to improve my show reel (trap alone in my room), and I'll just love to be in a big studio (to don't give the name ;) ), where you could speak about the direction of your scene before animating... while you're animating...be surround and driven by people with incredible talent...and so on.
I'm sure my animation might have been much better.
Anyway, thanks for the comment.

At the very least, you're receptive.
A wise person recently pointed out to me it might be to not wait for 'next time's' animation, and to instead go back and take what you learned to get it all the way right the second time with the first animation.
How long did it take you to render? I wonder if you can render out just the horizontal band that all mouth movement takes place in, and then go back and somehow composite that band over what you've already got that you don't want to change. Might save you some time if you go back in for a second pass.
Thats few days that i'm thinking about it...with a lot of doubt, and feeling nervous about it, but yes, I'm going to do a second pass on it for the lips sync.
sound really clever. After all, it's going to be in my show reel in order to sell my "ass".
So I'm starting right know to do drastic corrections.
It took about 3 weeks for the full rendering, I guess it might get much shorter by rendering a "limited area" as you described.
The first thing to get right is the Open GL version, in order to put it in my show reel and send it.
Thanks to point out problems and propose solution!

I LOVE that you're doing performing/acting - this is what it's all about. However, and I don't know if this is because of the influence of the reference footage, all the ideas you implemented are fine -- but for animation for it to really be as strong and dramatic and as punchy....
I think Dustin's character could mouth his words in stronger forms...he's sneaking them out in a whisper but you still have to make shapes.
As for her, again, great acting showing confusion, talking with the hands, and the PACING is really awesome especially....I could see MAYBE a little more dramatic openings with the mouth, maybe (she's got a tiny mouth, how far can it go?) but more importantly the mouth seems to move at a slower opening/closing pace than the dialogue, and that's distracting, and also some of the arm-throwing seems to have a bit of lag behind it. I know you can rationalize it with a weak upper body carrying heavy armory things, but the gist is that on camera it almost drags when you're really emphasizing "frenetic, kinetic"... What do you think?
Thanks again, by the way, a treat to watch
