converting to mp3's

By grauso | Thursday, May 26, 2005 at 9:04pm

Does anybody know how to convert songs from a cd to mp3's? Basically I want to know how to change any song I have on cd into any other format but specifically mp3. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance.

You can always download a freeware application that "rips" the tracks. dbPowerAmp.com has software for that, where you rip to a specific MP3 encoder. The resulting sound quality is good and the compression is very competitive.

What SL said. My app of choice is Goldwave.

It's shareware, but very inexpensive and an excellent package. I've bought it twice and feel I've gotten more than my money's worth. You'll have to download an MP3 converter plugin, but all the instructions are on the site.

iTunes should be able to do that for you.

I've been a long term user of Goldwave. Also have CoolEdit, but I do most of my work in Goldwave.

Doesn't iTunes only rip to the Apple format? m4-something?

Thanks so much for all of your help guys. I downloaded the gold wave but when I try and install it, it says I need LAME_EME.DLL module. And I followed the link for the LAME but I still cant seem to get anything to work. I did try iTunes but it just made them MPEG4 files. So, I'm getting closer but not quite there haha. Any suggestions as to where i can go from here? Thanks so much again for your help.

I don't know what it's still like, but on the downloads page at dbPowerAmp they used to have a link to -just- the encoder files for the LAME MP3 encoding DLL. Once you install the encoder usually every software program you have that's built for it can utilize the encoding feature.

With Goldwave you need to make sure you extract the lame files to the same folder as Goldwave, usually C://programs/Goldwave .

But this program may be all you really need:
