software to record drawing or brushstrokes?

I need some kind of software that let me record on-screen drawing.
I've tried AEs "write on" function which could work, but it doesn't have the brushes I need.
Photoshop's animation feature could work if it weren't that you have to stop drawing to add a keyframe, with brushes that are semi transparent you don't get a continous line that way.
And it does have to be a bitmap drawing tool, not vector.
Anyone know of any such software?, preferrable free or cheap.

Make sure your software does not have a script feature. I have Painter and it can be set up to record all of my actions and it could then be exported. I think Illustrator has this feature too.

If you get an independent app to do the job, you are going to have to watch on conflict with your drawing program. There is also the issue of hard drive space, video can really eat up a hard drive.

My question is why you want to record them. If it's for a tutorial taking screenshots from time to time is probably the best option.

What I want to do is I got some childrens drawing that are going to get coloured, like by a magic invisible hand.
I could do it frame by frame but I haven't found any good software for this, most of them don't have the brushes I want to use (semi-transparent children colour pens) or I can't get the result I want, as with Photoshops animation feature where everytime I stop and start drawing again, just to add a new frame/layer, I get the transparent pencil covering the end of the last line so I get spots of less transparency in my line.
Therefore I thought the best solution would be some kind of application that let's me draw in realtime and that the software records what I draw.
I really have to come up with a solution to this quite soon or the producer will chop my head off...

I remember seeing an application over at Flashkit.com that was written with Flash that records the drawing process and then plays it back to you. I am not sure something like that would work for you though.

Thank you, something along those lines but with no pens visible at playback and I really need some decent brushes. If I just wanted a solid line I can do that easily frame by frame but the final look of the material is the catch here.
(And I need to output uncompressed to at least 1828x1100px)

I realize that's a very simple example, but it sounds like you really require a custom application. I've seen some other sketch pads with color added, but you seem to really require something tailored for your particular project. Maybe one of the actionscript gurus over at Flashkit.com could put something together for you.

Have you ever tried Open Canvas. After you finish your image just go to file > export event file. Then, to play it back, go to import event file.

You can also set up a room to draw with friends online.

That might be what I'm after, if you could export the event into a image sequence or movie file, do you know if that's possible?
