Hello,
I'm a student in The Netherlands and am trying (for the second time) to get into Animation. Lasy year I was able to get through some entry requirements, but when they invited me at the college to see some of my personal work, I was not accepted.
Could anyone give me some advice? When I send in my work, to what should I pay special attention?
I'm supposed to make 2 comics, design one character and draw it from 3 different angles + make a background story for it, draw a room with some suspense in it + write an exiting background story which fits the image.
I've had a little talk with my old art teacher and he tells me I am talented but not original. That I have not developed my own style and that I need to make sure I do not lean toward Manga. - This has be confused because I thought I already had my own style. You can distinctively tell if something has been drawn by me or someone else and still I've gotten such a comment.
I'm scared I wont be accepted again, I -really- wish to study animation. Please help?
Do as much life drawing as you can, and find some other influences aside from manga. There's nothing wrong with manga, but if it is your only influence, your work will look unoriginal. Don't develop a style just yet. Explore different approaches, and push yourself in different directions. Eventually you will have a style, but there is no need to restrict yourself early on.
animation is about telling a story. It seems thats what they want from you in this acceptance project thing.
Comics convey storytelling in both layout/shot choices and character acting.
The story behind your character also seems to be key. Try to create a story then the character, not the other way around.
Same with the background image. Add intrest points to take focus.

There is little chance that I will ever go to a school so I am making a guess as to what you could do. Maybe you could contact the school and ask for some examples of what it would take to get in. If they are too vague then find some way around your question, like trying to see the work of students who made it in this season. So as for my two cents worth "Be Ware".
Stephen King writes in his book, "on writing", that you should start with the premise, or the story and then what happens when you add a specific character. I guess i'm saying listen to blinkmetoys.
Don't do nothing because you can't do everything.
