character design (for class)

Hey, I am taking a 3D character modeling class this quarter and needed to come up with a character to model.

So after slappin some squares and circles on a page i ended up comin up with something i liked. Here is a rough model sheet and some quick gesture sketches of the character. I plan on doing more gestures as well to kind of tweak the character if i need to.

Here are my sketches

So...what do you guys think about this creature?

I have to do some color tests as well for class so i will post some up when i get around to doing that part of the assignment. (in a week or 2)

haha, yah, somebody said it reminded them of oddworld on my concept sketches as well. They really inspired me and I like the whole weird little creature things. A few other things i have done have reminded people of oddworld even when I thought there was no real relation. I can see it in this character though.

I will post my 3d progress on that scientist character tomorrow. I have basic proportions and geometry set up and will be spending class tomorrow working on it.

here is my rough concept/model sheet for my second character. (yes his body will be mirrored so he will in fact have 2 legs)

In my first characters little story/personality deal I put him as an alien being studied in a research facility type thing. So i decided to create a scientist person, who then, through a series of rough sketches, evolved into this sort of half guy half robot kind of scientist. I need to work out the mechanical wheeled legs a bit more, but I will see what my teachers comments are about it tomorrow.

Also, my actual 3d model of my first character is coming along nicely, i will have a picture of it tomorrow.

Damn, nice stuff, outstrips me by far :D

hey, your comments are just as helpfull to me so feel free to share your opinions!

heres a small little update on the model sheet. Side view is better and the hand is palm down (thats how your supposed to do it when you model em in maya) You also see the characters name is "Cims"

here are some color tests i did today. i like the top left one.
*NOTE: the colors may appear faded from image compression*

The color is up to you, because only you know what you are going to be doing with the character. I am talking about the use of the character in animation, but I understand that for now you are just building a model.

Thanks for this...

Thanks for this. I really like to learn character design. Expecting more stuffs from your side...

hey. I have not given updates here in a while. So in case anybody is still curious I have pretty much finished my charaters.

Here is one of the characters that is more or less complete. I may have to do some tweaks to the model for animation purposes and a few extra texture related stuff but this is what I am turning in next week.

The next model still needs some texture work so i will post updated final renders of that on or around Monday.

Rough layout of character 2. Get to finish it this weekend, yay!

hey all! I have not updated this in a while. I have both models completed and am now unwrapping them so i can texture em.

here is the scientist model in completed form

Reminds me of Bart Simpson for some reason.

I can see that but it reminds me more of "Oddworld".
