Tony White "Pencils to Pixels" ToonZone Interview

Clearer details on the contents of the book than I've been able to find, and some personal thoughts that I find really respectable.

In case anyone hasn't seen it, it's a good read even if you're not getting the book but I know now that it's right up my alley.

Tony's Pencils to Pixels is one of the most complete animation production books I've seen. I haven't read it all yet, only skimmed through it, but it covers everything from coming up with an idea and copywrighting all the way through to finished animation. Really good book so far.

Happy reading!

It is the price of these books now that is killing me. Most of the books come with CD or DVD so that helps soom but there a some books that I wont costing fifty bucks with no extra CD or DVD.

The price of "Penciles to Pixels" has keeped me from getting it but I really wont.

If you trust the Marketplace there's a New one for three bucks less. 6 if you want it used. It's the same information, but I like to take care of my books, so I wouldn't get it...no sense in starting off on a not taken care of wrong foot =)

Thanks for the additional feedback Ape...Christmas is too far away...

I'm the same way, SL. If there's a book I want on the store shelf, but it's beat up or mangled in some way, I'll pass. I'd rather continue looking until I find one in good shape. Once it's in my library, if something happens - that's a different story. I'm talking about "professional" books here - novels, I couldn't care less what condition I get them in... :D

Thanks for sharing the article. I sincerely hope Tony White doesn't see this Blog. Authors' don't receive royalties unless you're in the "front realestate" of a bookstore and your name is Crichton, Koontz, or Steele. Royalties are a myth in publishing. But still, how would you like an animation , that you worked on for 2 years, going for $2 on Amazon ? If you can afford it, and it is a priority for your life, and growth, support the artist.
Again, thanks, I would have missed those great insights, which I pretty much agree with. There is a lot to be explored in animation.
DSB, good for you, I'm right with you.

Welcome Val. Hope to hear more from you.

The price Ape quoted from Amazon is probably their normally discounted price, as they do with most books. I don't think he was trying to take money out of Tony's pocket - just trying to point out that it's available for less than the cover price.

You make a good point about royalties and whether or not authors ever see any. John Canemaker once said that he has never seen a dime from any of his books beyond the advance he was paid to write them. It's important to keep in mind that we're talking about specialty books, which sell far fewer copies than we might imagine.

Ok, I just got the book and the CD is packed full. I am not sure but I think the CD is the book with video clips added. I need Adobe Reader to see the clips but I am happy with this purchase. Who needs food anyway.:D

Ok, the CD is like a scond book which makes the price a little easier to take.

Had time today to check out Tony Whites' Animaticus site. Nice site with the velum and classic cartoon script. Looks like they're still adding to it. Animaticus is sponsoring a Festival for new animators. Sign up is located www.withoutabox.com/03film/03t_fin/03t_fin_fest_01over.php?festival_id=5435
I think Mr White's comment about the corporate Disney feeding the mainstream safe pablem was right on. And holds true for most films released the last 10 years. Safe and in the box = profits. I love the Independents & foreign films, and animation simply because of the cultural differences.
Thanks again Scattered, for the reference.
