Hello. I'm a 21 year old artist who happens to have a love for things animated.
I got into an animaiton course only very recently and I needed to showcase my portfolio to get in. But now I'm having problems in the last while, as I'm not sure if the whole animation scene is even my thing despite my actual interests in it.
I don't really know if I want to pursue animation. I spent 1 year in a community college seeing if I could get anything out of it but I don't think I learned much. And the summer before I started, I tried it out in a summer course, and found animating stressful despite my ambition to improve. I was questioning if I should continue it then but I just decided to pursue the prosepcts because hey, animation has a lot of practicalities involved........except..
Now that I've moved out of my home for just under a week, I'm having thoughts about continuing the prospects of pursuing my course, even though ironically, I have an interest in animation itself. Its got a good rep but even then I'm questioning my decisions. It might be because college isn't for me at all but I don't really have an ambition anymore to do it, even though anytime I read up about art and animation elsewhere I get incredibly fired up. Ironically, I enjoy drawing but now I find the act of picking up a pencil so damm daunting.
As a result, its incredibly conflicting for me to know what to do. I enjoy artistic pursuits like painting, photography and prop designs but I'm just not sure if I'm into this scene, even though I know everything involved in all its technicalities.
I want to do animation, in a way, but I just don't know if college is my forte.
Hello S,
Leaving home and going it alone can be daunting and it's common for people in your position to feel the way that you do. On the positive, i can see you have a good interest in animation, and at your age you shouldn't be getting stressed about it. There are many specialities involved in animation and over time you can determine which aspect you enjoy most. I'm sure you already know this, but you can focus on storyboarding ( sketch), design ( with epople specialising in UI graphics, 2d Design, print, 3d etc). Then theres animators who would just specialise in on particular area too. This is how people end up getting consistent work, by specialising in one area.
So by the sounds of it, if you don;t actually like animating, then it's still good to do the course, but also spent most of your concntrating on something in the above you do actually enjoy doing.
As a side, after college, you don;t nessaily HAVE to go to university, unless pursuiing film work. In the corporate short form world, no one really cares what universoty you went to ( unless its one of the top few). Instead they will ook at your work, and many of the best just work from their own back learning and creating work in one of the specific areas.
Once you have a few projects up, either post on behnace or dribble, these are good design and animation show and tell communities.

If you want my HONEST reaction to this....You don't seem hungry enough....unless you make a switch and really get enthused about what you are doing at some point you will fail.
You really need to step-back and think about this decision.
