Red Chair Series: Disney Jr.'s Nancy Kanter

Women in Children’s Media (WiCM) will welcome Nancy Kanter, Senior Vice President, Original Programming and General Manager Disney Junior Worldwide, in a new interview series on Monday, February 13th at the TriBeCa Film Center. The event, the first in the Red Chair Series, will be moderated by WiCM Advisory Board Member and President of Redhead Consulting, Amy Friedman, and will be an intimate conversation touching upon the intersection of life and work at the top tier of children’s media.

Friedman will moderate future WiCM Red Chair Series interviews, which join a robust offering of approximately three events per month, including an ongoing Writer’s Group. Other events include panel discussions with preeminent researchers, content creators and tastemakers in the field, as well as networking sessions and outings to museums, theater and related industry happenings.

About Nancy Kanter:

Nancy Kanter is Senior Vice President, Original Programming and General Manager Disney Junior Worldwide. Kanter is responsible for Disney Junior, the multiplatform destination for kids ages 2-7 that reflects the emotional connection generations of consumers have to Disney storytelling and Disney characters, both classic and contemporary. Disney Junior is available on basic cable in more than 99 million U.S. homes (via a daily block on Disney Channel) and to millions of other viewers on 28 Disney Junior channels and free-to-air broadcast partners around the world.  On March 23, 2012, Disney Junior will debut as a basic cable and satellite channel in the U.S. 

Kanter leads the development and production of creative content for Disney Junior, unifying the creative vision and ensuring cohesiveness between programming, promotion and extensions of the brands.  She also oversees strategic direction for the multiplatform Disney Junior brand on TV, digital, and radio platforms. 

Kanter has held the position of Senior Vice President, Playhouse Disney Worldwide since 2008.  She joined Disney Channel in 2001 as Vice President, Original Programming and was promoted to Senior Vice President, Original Programming, Playhouse Disney U.S., in 2004.  Prior to joining Disney Channel, Kanter was President, Bluecow.com, an internet site for children's entertainment. She was previously an executive producer for Sesame Workshop (formerly Children's Television Workshop). Kanter's other experience includes producing ABC Afterschool Specials as well as film editing (for which she won an Emmy Award) and several award-winning documentary films for public television. Additionally, she served as an Adjunct Professor of Film at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY).

About Amy Friedman:

Amy Friedman is the President of Redhead Consulting, a brand creation and content development company, focused on new models of producing, packaging and distributing content.  

Current Redhead clients include MTV, Scholastic, Bonnaroo and Common Cents.  Recent clients include companies small and large across media, fashion, and finance. Redhead is also a partner in Breakers, a social venture with Millennials.

A veteran of the kids media business, Amy has held senior management positions across all of the Nickelodeon networks, most recently as the SVP of Original Programming/Creative Director at The N, now Teen Nick.  She was responsible for articulating and steering both Noggin and Teen Nick’s original brand strategy, on-air identity, educational mission, as well as developing and producing its original programming.  Friedman also architected Nickelodeon’s “The Big Help,” an on-going multi-platform global initiative to activate kids in their communities and Teen Nick’s “Halo Awards” celebrating service.  Friedman’s work in branding, programming and pro-social content has earned multiple Peabody, Beacon, Cable Ace and Creativity Awards.
