It’s been a sad month for superhero fans. Black Adam star and producer Dwayne Johnson has confirmed the just-launched franchise will not continue in the new DCU, despite development for a sequel already underway. Black Adam 2 joins Man of Steel 2 and Wonder Woman 3 in the DC sequel graveyard (don’t even mention the loss of Black Adam v. Superman, the wound is too fresh)

“James Gunn and I connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling,” Johnson stated on Twitter. “However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.” Gunn responded with, “Love @TheRock & I'm always excited to see what he & Seven Bucks do next. Can't wait to collaborate soon.” It seems both parties are trying very hard to hush mounting rumors of a feud.

Black Adam, which some labeled a theatrical flop, scraped by with marginal profits much lower than predicted for a star vehicle with heartthrob Johnson at the helm. However, audience reception was strong, proving the film a franchise starter with an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Both Johnson and Gunn mention working together in the future, so perhaps the new DC Studios CEOs are planning on laying a new DCU foundation before continuing with certain characters.

Who else will fall in this game of heroes?
