Fox’s R-rated superhero sequel scores second-biggest all-time opening for an R-rated movie.
It took one Marvel to topple another: Fox’s Deadpool 2, featuring the comic publisher’s hit merc with a mouth, took the top spot at the domestic box office in its opening weekend from Marvel Studio’s Avengers: Infinity War with $125 million in ticket sales.
Deadpool 2 also took in $176 million in foreign ticket sales for a $301 million worldwide debut weekend. That makes it the second-largest grossing R-rated film of all time after the original Deadpool’s $132 million opening in February 2016. It also was Fox’s second-best opening weekend of all time.
Avengers: Infinity War fell to second place with a $29 million weekend at the domestic box office. The superhero blockbuster has in four weekends of release earned $595 million domestic and $1.2 billion international for a $1.8 billion global total. That makes it the fourth largest global release in history, behind Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The box office won’t have to wait long for its next big release, with the release Friday of Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story tracking for a huge opening over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
