Paramount and MGM's R-rated action-comedy “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” tops the weekend chart, followed by Guillermo del Toro’s “Mama” and David O. Russell's “Silver Linings Playbook.”
Paramount and MGM's R-rated action-comedy Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, topped the weekend chart with a $19 million opening. Overseas, the film brought in $25 million for an international total of $35.8 million and worldwide total of $54.8 million.
Universal and producer Guillermo del Toro’s horror film Mama continued to benefit from its teen-friendly PG-13 rating, grossing $12.9 million in its second weekend for a domestic total of $48.6 million, and finishing in second place
In third place, David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook, from The Weinstein Co., grossed $10 million for a domestic total of $69.5 million.
Sony and Annapurna's Zero Dark Thirty placed fourth, grossing $9.8 million for a domestic total of $70 million.
The Jason Statham-Jennifer Lopez crime thriller Parker came in fifth for its debut weekend, grossing $7 million. Distributed domestically by FilmDistrict and financed by Sierra/Affinity, Incentive Filmed Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel, the film cost roughly $35 million to produce.
Featuring one of the most star-studded ensemble casts ever mounted, Relativity Media’s Movie 43 brought in $5 million during its debut weekend, coming in sixth place to tie with Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The brainchild of Peter Farrelly, the film’s cast includes Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Emma Stone, Halle Berry, Gerard Butler, Naomi Watts and many others. A raft of filmmakers and talent directed the various vignettes, including Elizabeth Banks, Brett Ratner, Griffin Dunne and Bob Odenkirk.
In seventh place, Best Picture contender Django Unchained likewise took in $5 million for a domestic total of $146.3 million. The filmcontinued to make headlines overseas in its second weekend, where it grossed $42.9 million for an international total of $111.5 million and worldwide total of $257.8 million.
Warner Bros.' Gangster Squad placed eighth, earning $4.2 million for a total of $39.6 million.
The action-thriller Broken City, from Emmett/Furla Films and New Regency, and starring Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones, came in ninth place on its sophomore weekend, bringing in $4 million for a total of $15.3 million.
Rounding out the list at number 10, Tom Hooper's Les Miserables, brought Universal $3.9 million for a total of $137.2 million.
As a side note, Arnold Schwarzenegger action film The Last Stand dropped off the top 10 list in its second weekend, earning a paltry $2.1 million. Coming in No. 16, the Lionsgate feature has earned total of $10.6 million.
