Sony’s “Resident Evil: Retribution” fought its way to the top of the North American box office this weekend, followed by Disney’s 3D reissue of “Finding Nemo.”
Sony’s Resident Evil: Retribution fought its way to the top of the North American box office this weekend as the fifth installment in the Resident Evil franchise, starring Milla Jovovich, brought in $21.1 million.
In second place, Disney’s Finding Nemo (3D) earned $17.5 million, lower than The Lion King's 3D re-release, which opened to $30.2 million on the same weekend last year. Originally released in 2003, the underwater tale, featuring the voices of Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres, grossed $867.6 million prior to its arrival in a new 3D version.
Lionsgate’s supernatural thriller The Possession took third place with $5.8 million for a total of $41.2 million in the film’s three weeks at the box office.
The Weinstein Co.'s prohibition-era drama Lawless dropped to fourth place on its third week out, bringing in $4.2 million for a total of $30.1 million.
Focus Features' animated family film ParaNorman came in fifth place, bringing in $3 million. The 3D stop-motion feature produced by Laika, the creative force behind Coraline, has now grossed a total of $49.3 million in its five weeks at the box office.
In sixth place, The Expendables 2, from Lionsgate and Millennium Films, brought in $3 million this weekend for a total of $80.3 million.
The Bradley Cooper-Zoe Saldana drama The Words came in seventh on its sophomore weekend, grossing $2.9 million for a total of $9.1 million.
Universal’s The Bourne Legacy followed in eighth place, earning $2.9 million for a total of $107.8 million.
At number nine, Buena Vista’s The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as a childless couple who dream up a 10-year-old boy, came in at number nine, making $2.5 million on its fifth week out for a total of $46.3 million.
Rounding out the list at number 10, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises brought in $2.1 million over the weekend, for a domestic total of $441 million.
