Canadian Channel Teletoon to Shut Down

Corus Entertainment has announced that the Canadian animation-focused TV channel will be revamped as Cartoon Network, with Cartoon Network transforming to Boomerang and Teletoon originals heading to new Teletoon+ streaming service; sunsetting set for March 27, 2023.

What a loss for animation history. Corus Entertainment has announced that Teletoon, a Canadian animation-focused TV channel for over 25 years, will soon shutter its doors.

Founded in 1997, Teletoon was originally created for child and teenage audiences, but later attracted a wider variety of viewers with more mature projects, such as Robot Chicken, Undergrads, and Clone High. The channel also brought well-loved original programs to the table, such as Angela Anaconda, Donkey Kong Country, and even a CGI Inspector Gadget reboot.

“After more than 25 years of delighting fans with hilarious hijinks and gut-busting antics, Teletoon is revamped as Cartoon Network,” reads a Corus press release, claiming the brand’s legacy is “marked by industry-leading animation across the country, shaping the landscape of children’s entertainment for generations.” Cartoon Network will now air Teletoon’s content, while Cartoon Network will transform to Boomerang.

Many of Teletoon’s original projects, as well as those the channel aired, will remain available on Teletoon+, a premium streaming service launched in September 2022. All content is commercial-free and downloadable.

“By partnering with Warner Bros Discovery Inc. and strengthening our portfolio of brands across linear platforms, STACKTV, and Teletoon+, we will usher Cartoon Network into a new stage of hilarious comedy and edge-of-your-seat action — all while keeping the Teletoon legacy alive in the digital space,” said Corus SVP Jennifer Abrams.

Teletoon sunsets March 27, 2023.
