The National Cartoonists Society (NCS) will be holding its Reuben Awards, Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-25, 2003, in San Francisco. This year Glenn McCoy leads the nominees with three nods in the Greeting Card, Magazine Gag Cartoon and Book divisions. The only other artists with more than one nomination were B.B. Sams (Advertising and Illustration, Book) and Jerry King (Greeting Card, Magazine Gag Cartoon). Several animation names appeared among the nominees, most notably Matt Groening for Cartoonist of the Year. TV Animation division recognition went to Butch Hardman (FAIRLY ODDPARENTS), Steve Hillenburg (SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS) and Greg Miller (WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ROBOT JONES?), while ICE AGE's Peter De Seve, SPIRITED AWAY's Hayao Miyazaki and LILO AND & STITCH's Chris Sanders were given nods in the Feature Animation division.
The cartoonists' "Oscar" is a prestigious event held each year in a different city, which is selected by the NCS president and board. The "Cartoonist of the Year" recipient receives the Reuben statuette, which was designed by and named after the NCS' first president, Rube Goldberg. Honorees in the various categories are awarded a plaque for excellence. The awards are voted on by a combination of the general membership and specially formed juries overseen by various NCS Regional Chapters.
