That was fast! Warner Bros. Discovery has reversed its recent decision to shelf the live-action/CGI hybrid film Coyote vs. Acme after several filmmakers cancelled meetings with the studio in protest, reports THR.
“Coyote vs. Acme is a great movie,” tweeted writer-director BenDavid Grabinski, who worked with Green on Happily. “The best of its kind since [Who Framed] Roger Rabbit … The leads are super likable. It’s beautifully shot. The animation is great. The ending makes everyone fucking cry. I thought the goal of this business was to make hit movies?”
While the film will not continue under the Warner Bros. banner, director Dave Green will now be allowed to shop Coyote to potential buyers, with Amazon as a rumored frontrunner. Interestingly, the film had already completed production and garnered audience scores in the 90s when Warner Bros. dropped the anvil. Can anyone say “tax write-offs?”
Based on Ian Frazier’s 1990 humor article “Coyote v. Acme,” the ill-fated flick was adapted for the big screen by Samy Burch. Mixing courtroom procedural and zany comedic elements, the story centers on a down-and-out billboard lawyer who decides to represent Wile. E. Coyote in his lawsuit against ACME Corporation over its defective products.
