As recipients of the 2013-14 Humanities Laureate Award, legendary animators The Brothers Quay are scheduled to speak at The DePaul Humanities Center On Wednesday, April 16; the event is free and open to the public.
Chicago area fans of stop-motion animation are in for a treat -- legendary animators The Brothers Quay will be speaking at The DePaul Humanities Center on Wednesday, April 16. The event is free and open to the public, and is being held with support from the DePaul Animation Program.
Identical twin brothers Stephen and Timothy are London-based film directors, stop motion animators, and artists, fresh from a comprehensive and highly-celebrated retrospective of their work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Influenced especially by Eastern European authors and artists, the Brothers Quay have created some of the most stunning and stunningly original images ever set to film in shorts such as Street of Crocodiles (1986) and full-length features such as Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life (1995).
In celebration of the genius and beauty of the Quays’ work, the DePaul Humanities Center is presenting the Brothers with the 2013-14 Humanities Laureate Award.
The Brothers Quay will be screening the Hopscotch retrospective that was continuously playing as part of the MoMA exhibit (in which images from their work were projected beside a small grove of birch trees) as well as their newest animated short based on the life and work of Felisberto Hernández.
