SAHARA-helmer Breck Eisner has been hired by Universal Pictures to remake CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, reports THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Gary Ross, whose father Arthur Ross was a writer on the 1954 original, is producing out of his Larger Than Life production shingle. Gary Ross wrote the current version of the screenplay and Tedi Safarian wrote a previous draft.
The original tale followed a scientific expedition searching for fossils in the Amazon that discovers a prehistoric creature, which they dub Gill-Man. The creature ends up terrorizing the group and falling in love with the fiancee of a member of the expedition. Eisner hopes to make the new version more edgy in the vein of ALIEN and John Carpenters THE THING.
Filming is set to start in the summer in the U.S. as well as Central or South America.
Universal Pictures president of production Donna Langley and vp production Jeff Kirschenbaum are shepherding the film for the studio.
Eisner is the son of former Walt Disney ceo/chairman Michael Eisner.
