Fettle Animation’s ‘Children of the Holocaust’ Headed to Annecy

BAFTA-nominated documentary series, ‘Children of the Holocaust,’ is shortlisted for the 2015 Annecy International Animation Festival in France in June.

Fettle Animation's BAFTA-nominated documentary series Children of the Holocaust is shortlisted for the 2015 Annecy International Animation Festival in France in June.

The critically-acclaimed series, commissioned by BBC Learning and created with members of the charity the Holocaust Survivors Friendship Association, was chosen from 2,600 global films to be shown at the world's best known animation festival.

“Ruth’s story,” one of the six animated tales of elderly Holocaust survivors told for a young audience, is a finalist in the Commissioned Films Section.

The Annecy accolade comes hot on the heels of five award nominations for the successful 2D animation studio. Children of the Holocaust, which has been screened at 10 international film and animation festivals over the last twelve months, is currently shortlisted for a Sandford St Martin’s Children’s Award and a British Universities Film and Video Council Learning Onscreen Awards in the UK. Fettle Animation is also a finalist in the Animation category of the Prolific North awards.

“Being selected for Annecy has long been an ambition,” said Zane Whittingham, Royal Television Society Award winning founder and Animation Director at Yorkshire-based Fettle. “It's a privilege to be recognised by such an acclaimed festival and to have my work shown alongside international animators who I admire greatly. The festival also offers us an exciting opportunity to meet international creative and business partners to explore ideas for new projects.”

The films were designed and animated by Zane and the Fettle team, hand drawn and animated using a digital cutout technique. Designs were inspired by political cartoons and posters from the period.

Children of the Holocaust has previously been nominated, in 2014, for a Children’s BAFTA in the Learning Secondary Category. The series can be watched online in the U.K. currently and Fettle is working with SND Films to secure broadcasts in other countries around the world.

The Annecy International Animation Festival, which takes place from June 15-20, has been running for over 45 years. It is the animation industry’s foremost showcase in co-producing, financing and distributing animated content worldwide.
