Chatsworth, California-based computer-animation house GigaPix Studios has opened a new 32,000-square-foot facility, according to HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The company intends to expand to 120-160 artists. Ceo Chris Blauvelt and president John Savage plan to move from shorts to independent computer-animated features.
"GigaPix is entering the market at an opportune time for the independent," Blauvelt said. "Financing for moderate-budget, well-crafted CGI features with great storytelling is readily available."
Savage said the company is starting a 90-minute theatrical film to coincide with the launch of a major theme park in development in the Western U.S. The budget is $30 million.
In addition, the company is developing adventure comedy JUNK BOTS; TWILIGHT, about a young bunny entering eternal twilight; sci-fi thriller ALIEN SAR; and superhero spoof HYPNOPIG.
The studio recently hired 15 new artists, including effects artist Paul Ghezzo and Greg Pusateri, a sound effects editor who won an Emmy for his work on THE X-FILES.
