The ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff following the son of a luchador set to inherit the ancestral superpowers of his bloodline may have lost its star after the film was scrubbed from the studio’s release calendar earlier this year.
Is there trouble in the ring? Grammy-winning rapper Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny) may have stepped away from his role as a superpowered luchador in Sony’s shelved El Muerto.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Ocasio stated, “I don’t know what to say,” when questioned about the wayward film, describing the matter as, “delicate,” to which his publicist Sujeylee Solá stated, “Obviously, [the film is] out.” Whether Solá meant the entire film was cancelled or just Ocasio’s role is unclear.
The live-action superhero film follows the son of a luchador who is set to inherit the ancestral superpowers of his bloodline, making it the first Marvel film with a Latino lead character. The character El Muerto originally appeared in the “Spider-Man” universe as an antihero, but something tells us he will win the hearts of the (female) audience.
The rough and ready film would have been directed by Jonás Cuarón (Desierto), from a script by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer (Blue Beetle). Sony never released details on who would handle the VFX.
The ever-expanding Sony Pictures Marvel universe still includes the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film, expected to release on August 30, 2024, and Madame Web, set for a February 14, 2024 release.
El Muerto was originally set to release theatrically on January 12, 2024.
