‘Loki’ EP Michael Waldron to Write ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’

The Disney+ show’s creator replaces previous writer Jeff Loveness as the production moves in a new direction, also sans original director Destin Daniel Cretton; the troubled film is still slated for a May 1, 2026 release.

Michael Waldron, creator and EP on Disney+’s Loki, already on board to write Avengers: Secret Wars, will now pen Avengers: Kang Dynasty, replacing original writer Jeff Loveness (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania). As production moves in a new direction, original director Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has also stepped down from his role and has not yet been replaced.

The project has faced controversy surrounding Kang actor Jonathan Majors, with speculation that the character could get dropped altogether as the story changes direction. Separate from drama within the creative team, the film’s release was also delayed until May 1, 2026 due to the writers strike.

So far, plot details have not been revealed for the upcoming film. However, we do know that Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars were planned as a two-part story, which would conclude the ‘Multiverse Saga’ phase of the MCU. Audiences have become acquainted with Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumani, as well as the Loki series, but with the multiverse in play, any version of the character is possible. If Kang gets scrapped altogether, that could mean huge changes to Marvel Phases 5 and 6.

Avengers: Kang Dynasty is set to premiere May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars hitting theaters May 7, 2027.
