Maria Bello is set to take on the role originated by Rachel Weisz in the MUMMY franchise for the series' third edition, reports VARIETY. The cast already includes Brendan Fraser, Luke Ford, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. Rob Cohen (XXX) will direct the Universal Pictures production.
The story follows the O'Connells (Fraser & Bello) and their grown son (Ford) as they traverse the forbidden tombs of China and the Himalayas where they encounter the mummified former Chinese emperor (Li) who has been brought back to life a shape-shifting creature by a wizard (Yeoh). SMALLVILLE creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough wrote the script.
The new film will be released in summer 2008. Sean Daniel, Jim Jacks, Stephen Sommers and Bob Ducsay will produce.
