Mediawan Pictures Acquires ‘Undone’ Producer Submarine

Fresh off its acquisition of Plan B, the French media conglomerate has purchased the Amsterdam-based developer and producer responsible for the Prime Video series and Richard Linklater’s ‘Apollo 10 ½.’

French media conglomerate Mediawan has added a new feather to its company cap. Fresh off its acquisition of Plan B Entertainment, the company, according to Variety, has purchased the Emmy Award-winning, Amsterdam-based, developer and producer Submarine. While financial terms have not yet been revealed, the deal is for a majority stake in the company.

Submarine holds the largest animation studio in the Netherlands, with additional offices in London and Los Angeles. The Dutch company produced Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood for Netflix, the Prime Video series Undone directed by Hisko Hulsing (Sandman short A Dream of a Thousand Cats, Junkyard), and the upcoming drama series The Kollective by Leonardo Fasoli (ZeroZeroZero, Gomorrah) and Maddalena Rvaglia.

Mediawan Pictures CEO Elisabeth d’Arvieu, said in a statement, that Submarine’s “expertise in all genres and particularly in adult animation and international series and their appetite for coproductions is a real asset for the continuous development of our group.”

“We are thrilled about this new chapter in Submarine’s story,” Femke Wolting and Bruno Felix, Founders and Managing Directors of Submarine, told Deadline. “Joining forces with Mediawan opens up a wealth of opportunities, allowing us to tap into their extensive network, resources and industry-leading expertise. This exciting partnership will fuel our mission of producing groundbreaking and innovative films and series that resonate with global audiences.”

Mediawan’s recent acquisitions serve the company’s current strategy (playfully named “House of Talent”) of creating international co-productions in the pursuit of commanding IPs. The buying spree is sure to continue.
