Netflix Drops ‘Spellbound’ Official Trailer, Key Art, New Images

Get swept away on a monstrous adventure when the animated feature from Skydance Animation and director Vicky Jenson debuts November 22.

Netflix has revealed the official trailer, key art, and exciting new images for Skydance Animation’s upcoming animated film Spellbound.

In the new 3DCG adventure, Ellian (Rachel Zegler) squares off with her mother and father, the king and queen of Lumbria. But this isn’t your typical family drama — a mysterious spell has transformed Ellian’s parents into massive, rampaging monsters.

Vicky Jenson (Shrek) directs, with an original score from EGOT-winning composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast) and lyrics by Glenn Slater (Tangled). A Netflix Film from Skydance Animation, Spellbound is written by Lauren Hynek & Elizabeth Martin and Julia Miranda.

“I can't think of Ellian without thinking of Rachel Zegler,” said Jenson. “She just IS Ellian. She's got such a wonderful, charismatic personality, very real and fresh. She's a great actress and a stunning singer. When we met and started working with her, she was just down for it, down to play, to try anything. Even in her earliest demos of the songs she was weeping, she was laughing, she just brought everything and left nothing on the table. A lot of what she did in those early days is still in the movie, it was just that good.  Rachel is one of a kind. She simply has everything.”

Joining Zegler on the all-star voice cast is Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos, Roar) as Queen Ellsmere; Javier Bardem (Dune) as King Solon; John Lithgow (Killers of the Flower Moon, Bombshell) as Minister Bolinar; Jenifer Lewis (The Princess and the Frog, Black-ish) as Minister Nazara Prone; Nathan Lane (The Lion King, The Producers) as the Oracle of the Sun; André De Shields (tick, tick…BOOM!Hadestown) as the Oracle of the Moon; and Jordan Fisher (Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You) as Callan.

Spellbound is about what it is that really makes a family,” added Jenson. “Like any timeless myth or lasting fairytale, I believe the meaning reaches even further than the specifics of this family’s dynamic. It speaks to kids and their parents and the kinds of alienation that can happen between them as well as the steps we have to take toward each other, how we can weather it together, to come through to the other side with better understanding.

John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Bruce Anderson produce for Skydance Animation.

Spellbound streams November 22 on Netflix.
