Netflix Reportedly Developing Live-Action ‘Pokémon’ Series

‘Lucifer’ executive producer and showrunner Joe Henderson is said to have already begun staffing a writers’ room as development begins on the show.

Netflix is developing a live-action series based on the hugely successful Pokémon media franchise, according to Hollywood Reporter. Lucifer showrunner and executive producer Joe Henderson has already begun staffing a writer’s room for the project, and will be writing and executive producing the show.

This is welcome news for fans, seeing as it looks like Pokémon Detective Pikachu 2 has been scrapped, according to an Inverse interview with Pokémon Detective Pikachu star Justice Smith, who shared, “I think we have to just kind of bury our hopes. I don't think it's going to happen.”

The Pokémon franchise, created by Satoshi Tajiri, began life in 1995 as an original Game Boy game; since then it has, according to Wikipedia, grown into the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, surpassing Mickey Mouse, Star Wars and Harry Potter. We’re talking an estimated $105 billion, which includes more than $80 billion in licensing. They put the OMG in IP.

In Pokémon, humans known as trainers catch and train Pokémon to battle other Pokémon and their trainers for sport. The franchise includes video games, collectables, card games, movies, manga, TV series and a highly popular augmented reality mobile game Pokémon Go. If you can find it, there was even a fever dream musical called Pokémon Live!
