Paul McCartney’s Animated ‘High in the Clouds’ Finds Director, Writer

Toby Genkel will direct the feature film adaptation of the iconic rocker’s 2005 novel from a screenplay by Jon Croker, with pre-production to begin first quarter 2024.

Paul McCartney’s upcoming animated film High in the Clouds has rounded out its creative team, with the addition of director Toby Genkel (The Amazing Maurice) and screenwriter Jon Croker (Paddington 2), according to Variety. Michael Giacchino (Coco, Inside Out) will score the project, with Patrick Hanenberger (The Croods, The LEGO Movie 2) acting as production designer.

The film, an adaptation of McCartney’s 2005 adventure novel of the same name, will feature six new original songs by the iconic rocker, who will also voice a lead character. Two additional, yet unannounced, musical stars will also lend their voice talents.

High in the Clouds follows the teenage squirrel Wirral in the city of Gretschville, where music has been banned by the owl Gretsch. Determined to bring back music, Wirral joins a band of musicians who hide in Harmonia, a secret place high above.

McCartney’s MPL Communications co-produces with the French studio Gaumont, which will also distribute the film in France. Production for High in the Clouds will begin in the first quarter of 2024, with a premiere date estimated to be for the first quarter of 2026.
