Fox 2000 is moving forward on a sequel to PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF, reports 24 Frames. The film would be based on the second book, THE SEA OF MONSTERS, in the bestselling five-book series from Rick Riordan. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (ED WOOD) will adapt the script.

In the original, 17-year-old Percy learns that he is the son of Greek god Poseidon. In the sequel, he and his friends will hit the seas to find the Golden Fleece in order to save their kidnapped friend.

Chris Columbus, who directed the original, will not direct, but will produce with Karen Rosenfelt (TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN). Star Logan Lerman is expected to return.

The film could start production as early as the summer.

THE LIGHTNING THIEF earned $89 million in the States and $137 million around the globe.
