Disgruntled online fans demand Brie Larson step down as Captain Marvel, citing bad personality and a need for a queer woman of color.
Uh-oh, looks like the most powerful hero in the galaxy still has one weakness: public opinion! An online petition demands that Brie Larson relinquish the Captain Marvel helm to make way for a woman of color. This petition has appeared alongside many others pushed by disgruntled fans trying to influence change for everything from a remake of Game of Thrones Season 8 with new writers, to firing Amber Heard from Aquaman 2.
According to the petition, Monica Rambeau should take up the title, as she was the first female version of the Cap in 1982. Diving even deeper, the petition insinuates Larson is a fake feminist based on her donations history, and claims she should prove herself as a social justice ally by stepping down to "ensure a gay woman of color plays the role."
This follows another petition started on Change.org a year ago, trying to cancel Larson based on her personality alone. The actress has faced backlash since the release of Captain Marvel for reasons as simple as ‘not smiling enough,’ or being too much or not enough of a ‘social justice warrior.’ Regardless of the petty public, it doesn’t seem Carol Danvers is going anywhere, anytime soon.
Production on Captain Marvel 2 is moving forward with a new writer and director, as Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are not be returning. Megan McDonnell (WandaVision) is set to pen the sequel, while the search continues for a new female director. The film is tentatively set for a 2022 release.
