Religious Groups Urge Closing of Russian Cartoon Channel

Russian adult cartoon channel 2X2 has come under fire for the second time in two weeks for airing cartoons that allegedly promote homosexuality, violence and religious intolerance, VARIETY reports.

Both Christian and Muslim groups have urged the Moscow-based channel to close.

A Protestant church umbrella group called the Consultative Council of the Heads of the Protestant Church in Russia led the protests.

The groups want top Russian prosecutor Yury Chaika to intervene.

Similarly angry comments were heard from Umar-Khazrat Idrisov, head of regional Muslim association in Nizhny Novgorod, urging all Russian Muslims to make state TV watchdog the Federal Culture and Cinematography pull 2X2's license.

Russia's main religion -- the Orthodox Church -- has yet to comment.

Shows like SOUTH PARK are drawing the groups' ire this week, but last week 2X2 pulled American cartoons HAPPY TREE FRIENDS and THE ADVENTURES OF BIG JEFF after complaints from government watchdog Rossvyazokhrankulutra charged that the cartoons were too cruel and violent.

This time 2X2 has brushed off the religious criticism, saying its audience is men aged 16 to 30, not children.

The ProfMedia-owned channel has a 2 percent audience share on average.
