Shanghai-based production company P.I.G. China is taking a look at the development of super hero movies in the Middle Kingdom.
Chinese audiences have long remained elusive to Hollywood studios, which have tried for decades to gain a firm foothold in the world’s second-largest film market. While none of the usual formulas appear to be working, the deluge of Hollywood super hero movies shows no signs of abating, with an estimated 63 comic book adaptations set to hit the big screen by 2020 from creators ranging from Captain America directors Joe and Anthony Russo to comic book powerhouse Stan Lee.
Along with a concise history of animated super hero projects in China, the P.I.G. China blog details Realm of the Tiger, Lee’s latest super hero project being produced under his Magic Storm Entertainment shingle, and the Russo Brothers’ plans for a $230 million trilogy of Mandarin super hero movies starring an original Chinese hero.
