Robert Rodriguez has inked a deal to helm BARBARELLA, a new film version of Jean-Claude Forest's sci-fi comicbook series, reports the trades. Universal Pictures is hoping to release the film in 2008. Dino and Martha De Laurentiis are producing.
Barbarella is a female mercenary who takes on missions, which take her to the furthest reaches of the universe and test her physical attributes, which often includes sexual escapades.
Rodriguez will team with writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (CASINO ROYALE) to pen a script.
