Die-hard fans of The Simpsons have a new way to prove their love. In celebration of the 500th episode of the animated series, Fox is sponsoring a fan marathon of all 500 episodes of the series, in order, all at once, on February 8.
As the Los Angeles Times reports, the hope is to crown a new Guinness World Record holder for longest continuous television viewing -- a record set in 2010 by three viewers of another Fox series, 24. Kevin Coon, Victor Lopez and Farris Hodo beat out 100 other participants in the 24 marathon showing by staying awake for 86 hours, 6 minutes and 41 seconds to watch every episode of all six seasons of the Kiefer Sutherland action drama.
The trick this time is that, with an average episode running time of 24 minutes, it would take around 200 hours to make it through all the episodes. That's just 64 hours short of the scientifically monitored record set for a human to go without sleep in 1965. While the three intrepid viewers of the 24 marathon were able to get to the end, it's entirely possible that the Simpsons super fans won't make it to the 500th episode. At the very least they'll be running risk of headaches, hand tremors, hallucinations and depression (tied in with lack of sleep, not the quality of the show's more recent seasons).
Adventurous souls have already signed up at SimpsonsMarathon.com, but only 100 fans were selected to take part in the marathon screening held at Hollywood & Highland. What's in it for the winner? $10,500.
