True Grit Takes Over Top of the Box Office

Paramount's TRUE GRIT had the gumption to stick it out and take the top spot at the U.S. box office in its third week.

For the weekend of Jan. 7-9, 2011, the Coen Brothers Western (with vfx from Creature Effects, Luma Pictures, Special FX International, Tinsley Studio and Wolf Stuntworks) added $15 million to its $110.4 million cume.

Universal's LITTLE FOCKERS spawned another $13.8 million in second. The threequel has earned $124 million to date.

Rogue's SEASON OF THE WITCH staked a place in third with $10.7 million. The fantasy flick has vfx from Filmefex Studio and Tippett Studio.

Disney's TRON: LEGACY drops to fourth, collecting $9.8 million. With visual effects provided by Digital Domain, Mr. X and Prime Focus, the virtual world epic has made $147.9 million.

Rocketing up from ninth to fifth, Fox Searchlight's BLACK SWAN twirled away with $8.35 million. With vfx from Look Effects, Darren Aronofsky's thriller has brought in $61.5 million to date.

Screen Gem's COUNTRY STRONG expanded and moved up to sixth, taking home $7.3 million. Its cume is now $7.44 million.

Paramount's THE FIGHTER slugged it out in seventh, bringing in $7 million. With visual effects from Comen VFX, the true-life tale has a cume of $57.8 million.

The Weinstein Co.'s THE KING'S SPEECH moves up from tenth to eighth, talking up $6.81 million. The stuttering royalty story has earned $33.3 million to date,

Warner Bros.' YOGI BEAR plummeted from fourth to ninth with $6.81 million. With vfx from Rhythm & Hues, Entity FX and NeoReel, the latest LAFF has a cume of $75.6 million.

Disney's TANGLED closed out the top ten with $5.2 million. Disney's animated hit has earned $175.9 million thus far.
