IMAX Signs Theater Deal In Dubai

IMAX Corporation has signed an agreement with Meydan, a sports and entertainment property developer in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to install an IMAX theatre as part of a multi-billion development at the world-famous Nad Al Sheba, Dubai's premier thoroughbred horse racing track.

Nad Al Sheba is home to the Dubai World Cup, one of the world's most prestigious horse racing events.

Expected to be installed by the end of 2009, the new theatre brings the total number of IMAX locations in the Middle East to 12 by 2010.

Kung Fu Panda Opens Strong In IMAX

IMAX and DreamWorks Animation announced that KUNG FU PANDA: The IMAX Experience opened with strong box office results at IMAX theatres over the three-day weekend from Friday June 6, through Sunday June 8.

The film grossed $2.3 million on 89 domestic IMAX screens and six international IMAX screens, for a per-screen average of approximately $24,000. The film will continue to open in international locations in the weeks ahead, ultimately playing on 36 international IMAX screens.

Kung Fu Panda Opens In IMAX Today

IMAX and DreamWorks Animation will release KUNG FU PANDA in 89 domestic IMAX theaters from June 2008 to May 2010. The film opens in theaters today.

The film will also open in 37 IMAX theatres internationally during the days and weeks following the domestic launch. Kung Fu Panda has been digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with IMAX DMR technology.

Madagascar 2 Goes Big on IMAX

IMAX Corp. and DreamWorks Animation SKG today announced an agreement to release MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA into IMAX theatres worldwide on Nov. 7, 2008. The agreement completes IMAX's integration into DreamWorks Animation's release strategy for the studio's next five theatrical releases from June 2008 to May 2010.

Under the terms of the agreement, MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA will be digitally re-mastered for The IMAX Experience and play for a special release in IMAX theatres, including select new IMAX Digital theatres, which will begin rolling out this summer.

Speed Racer Opening on 84 IMAX Screens

IMAX Corp. and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that SPEED RACER will open in North America on 84 IMAX screens today, simultaneously with the movie's wide release. The picture will also open internationally in 26 IMAX theatres during the days and weeks following the domestic launch.

SPEED RACER has been digitally re-mastered into the IMAX Experience with IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. Warner Bros. Pictures will be the exclusive distributor of the film to IMAX theatres worldwide.

IMAX Gets Financing Deals For Digital Rollout

IMAX Corporation has entered into two significant financing transactions, one with Wachovia Capital Finance Corporation and one with the Douglas family, IMAX's largest shareholder.

The deal with Wachovia will be to increase future availability and modify other terms under the company's existing credit facility

The deal with the Douglas family is for the sale of approximately 2.73 million common shares in a private placement at an aggregate purchase price of $18 million.

IMAX And Warners Hit $400 Million Box Office Milestone

IMAX and Warner Bros. Pictures have crossed the $400 million mark at the IMAX box office with films released through the partnership between the two companies.

Since June 2003, Warners has released 16 titles in IMAX's format, five of which were in IMAX 3-D, including two live action pictures that were partially converted into 3-D with IMAX's proprietary 2-D to 3-D conversion technology.

More IMAX Projection Systems Coming Soon

IMAX Corporation and Regal Cinemas announced a joint-venture agreement to install 31 IMAX Digital projection systems at Regal locations in 20 major U.S. markets.

The theaters will feature IMAX's Digital projection system which is being developed for the IMAX MPX theatre design. The 31 IMAX theaters announced today will expand the joint venture partnership between IMAX and Regal Cinemas to 38 theaters, and bring Regal's total number of IMAX theaters to 52 by the end of 2010.

IMAX Digital Projection System Powered By DLP

Texas Instruments DLP Cinema announced Wednesday at ShoWest that IMAX will incorporate the DLP Cinema projector solution.

Under the terms of the agreement, each IMAX Digital projection system to be deployed to commercial exhibitors around the world, scheduled to begin mid-2008, will be powered by DLP Cinema projectors.

IMAX's highly anticipated digital projection system integrates a suite of proprietary IMAX intellectual properties with the DLP Cinema projector solution in a way that creates The IMAX Experience in a digital format.

Speed Racer Will Simultaneously Release In IMAX

SPEED RACER will be simultaneously released to IMAX and conventional theatres on May 9, IMAX and Warner Bros. announced Tuesday.

SPEED RACER, based on the hit anime series created by Tatsuo Yoshida, is written and directed by MATRIX creators the Wachowskis.

The film will be digitally re-mastered using IMAX's digital re-mastering technology.

Warners will be the exclusive distributor of the film to IMAX theatres worldwide.

IMAX Box Office For Spiderwick Encouraging

IMAX Corporation announced today that THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, a fantasy adventure based on the best-selling series of books, opened well in IMAX theaters over the five-day opening weekend, grossing approximately $1.9 million of the film's $26.8 million total, or 7 percent of the overall box office.

Nineteen of the top twenty locations in North America included an IMAX theater.

Simpsons and Spiderwick Contests

MyToons.com, IMAX and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are collaborating to offer two contests to fans in February.

To honor THE SIMPSONS creator Matt Groening's birthday on Friday, artists and cartoon enthusiasts are asked to draw or download a doughnut, decorate it and upload to www.mytoons.com.

One hundred contest winners will receive a dozen Krispy Kreme Doughnuts or a SIMPSONS T-shirt for sharing the Homer Simpson-worthy creations.

Contest runs through Feb. 18.

Spiderwick On IMAX

THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES will open in IMAX theaters around the world today, as well as in regular 35mm theaters.

The movie, based on a best-selling children's book, has been digitally remastered to better tell the tale of the Grace family adventures at the Spiderwick estate.

Special visual effects are by Industrial Light and Magic, vfx by Tippett Studio.

3-D Beowulf Posts Highest Grossing Second Weekend in IMAX History

BEOWULF: AN IMAX 3-D EXPERIENCE grossed $2.95 million on 84 domestic IMAX screens during its second weekend, setting a new record for the highest grossing second weekend in IMAX history. IMAX theaters contributed more than 17% of the weekend's overall domestic box office of $16.5 million on less than 2% of the screens, with a per-screen average of $35,076. The 10-day domestic total for the IMAX 3-D release was $8.8 million, with a per-screen average of $104,500. Further, 45 of the 50 top-performing domestic locations playing BEOWULF were IMAX theaters.

Beowulf Slays Bee Movie and Shines in 3-D

Robert Zemeckis' performance captured BEOWULF opened at number one with $27.5M for Paramount Pictures during the weekend ended Nov. 18, 2007. However, bolstered by animation and vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks, it wasn't surprising that the 3-D gross accounted for nearly half the business. The Real D digital 3-D engagement brought in $8M in 638 locations, while IMAX 3-D delivered $3.58M on 84 domestic IMAX screens for a company percentage record. BEOWULF also performed well internationally, grossing an estimated $660,000 from 13 IMAX screens.

IMAX & DreamWorks Sign Four Pic Deal

IMAX Corp. and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. announced a deal to release the studio's first three 3-D motion pictures worldwide in IMAX 3-D. The IMAX 3-D releases will include MONSTERS VS. ALIENS in March 2009, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON in November 2009 and SHREK GOES FOURTH in May 2010. A fourth DreamWorks Animation title, KUNG FU PANDA, will be released in IMAX's 2-D format in June 2008. The IMAX 3-D titles are expected to be among the first presented with IMAX's digital 3-D projection system, which is scheduled to be launched beginning June 2008.

Spiderwick Chronicles to Get IMAX'd

THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies will get an IMAX release along with a conventional one when the fantasy adventure opens theatrically on Feb. 15, 2008. THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, based on the best-selling series of books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black is directed by Mark Waters (MEAN GIRLS, FREAKY FRIDAY) and produced by Mark Canton (300) from a script by Karey Kirkpatrick and David Berenbaum and John Sayles. This marks the fourth film agreement between IMAX and Paramount Pictures in the past five months. BEOWULF will be released in IMAX 3-D on Nov.

IMAX Sets Target Launch for Digital Projection

IMAX has moved up the launch date of its digital projection system in development to the second quarter of 2008 from its previously announced time frame of the end of 2008 to mid-2009. The IMAX digital projection system will further enhance The IMAX Experience and help to drive profitability for studios, exhibitors and IMAX theaters by virtually eliminating the need for film prints, increasing program flexibility and ultimately increasing the number of movies shown on IMAX screens.

Order of the Phoenix Sets IMAX 3-D Record

Warner Bros. Pictures' HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX continues to break IMAX box office records through its 7th week. The IMAX 3-D release, has now earned more than $35 million worldwide ($24 million plus on 91 IMAX screens domestically and $11 million plus on 52 IMAX screens internationally), making it the highest grossing live-action Hollywood IMAX release.

Transformers to Get IMAX Turbo Charge

The battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons will get even larger, as TRANSFORMERS gets the IMAX Experience on Sept. 21 - showing off ILM's innovative hard body surface modeling with additional vfx work from Digital Domain.

Order of the Phoenix Bows in Record IMAX Screens

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX will cast its spell in a record 126 IMAX theaters worldwide today (July 11, 2007) and throughout the weekend.

In addition to the usual DMR live-action conversion, there is a 2-D to 3-D conversion for the final 20 minutes, marking the most elaborate live-action stereoscopic presentation thus far.

Columbia Pictures' SPIDER-MAN 3: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE has grossed more than $20 million worldwide since premiering on May 3, 2007. The picture continued its heroic box office performance by reaching the $20 million milestone faster than any other 2-D digitally re-mastered IMAX release, between its opening on May 3 and June 3. SPIDER-MAN 3 is currently playing on 84 domestic IMAX screens and 34 international IMAX screens, the largest opening in IMAX's 40-year history.
