9 director Shane Acker has joined The Gnomon School of Visual Effects as the staff's newest Resident Artist.
The 13th LA Shorts Fest is the largest short film festival in the world. Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences accredited. ROBOT CHICKEN writer Dan Milano has been hired to bring a new twist to the 1986 film, SHORT CIRCUIT, according to VARIETY. The original followed Number 5, a military robot, which after being struck by lightning, became a protector of humans.
Original's producer David Foster will return to produce alongside Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde.
The original was written by S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock.
UP producer Jonas Rivera told SCIFI Wire this week about the name and plot of the special-to-DVD/Blu-ray short Pixar has in the works.
Titled DUG'S SPECIAL MISSION, the short gives "a little bit of the backstory of what Dug was actually doing" before meeting up with Carl and Russell in UP.

Disney presented a short teaser trailer of TOY STORY 3 to the public for the first time Sunday at NAB in Las Vegas, reports VARIETY.
The animated short shows Woody supervising the cast of toys as they improvise a sign for the film, only to have Buzz upstage them with a high-tech version.
3-D versions of the first two TOY STORY films will be released as a double feature this fall, and the third film will debut June 18, 2010.
The studio also showed the song "Belle" from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST in 3-D. It will get a theatrical re-release in 2010.

Scarti Cultural Association, with the support of Regione Siciliana, Provincia Regionale di Catania and Comune di Acireale, organizes the 8th edition of Magma -- mostra di cinema breve (International short film festival).
The festival, opened to directors and works from all around the world, will be held in Acireale (CT) -- Italy.
Cortoons International Short Animated Film Festival is opening registrations for its sixth edition, that will be held March 25-29, 2009 at the Palladium Theatre in Rome, Italy.
The competition's five categories:

The festival is totally free and all techniques of animation accepted. The short films must have been created after January 1, 2007. Deadline: January 1, 2009.
At the 2009 Durango Independent Film Festival, which concluded March 8, Swedish animated short ASTON'S STONES won for Best Animated Short and the audience award for Best Short. The film is directed by Lotta & Uzi Geffenblad.
THE CAVE: AN ADAPTATION OF PLATO'S ALLEGORY IN CLAY, directed by Michael Ramsey, won for Animated Short Jury Commendation at the Colorado-based film festival.

The film is a comicbook adaptation of the DC/Vertigo title about a band of black ops commandos who are set up to be killed by their own government, but escape and plot revenge.
Short will play the role of Pooch. WATCHMEN's Jeffrey Dean Morgan will play Clay, the team's leader.
Hard Times Short Film CompetitionDeadline: April 19, 2009
London-based multiplatform distributor Digital Rights Group have partnered with L.A.-based online filmmaking community Filmaka (www.filmaka.com) to sponsor a short film competition around the theme of "Hard Times." The winners win a cash prize plus the chance of being propelled to the movie making major league. If their three-minute short film submitted is selected, the distributor is offering the winners the opportunity to turn it into a TV series, movie or Web series.
The Omaha Film Festival is now accepting entries in the following categories: Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Short Film, Animated Short Film, OFF the EDGE Feature Film (Horror, Experimental, Dark Films longer than 25 minutes) and Nebraska Short Film.
Screenplays will be accepted in Feature Length (30-140 pages) and Short Length (Under 30 pages).
