WonderCon 2009

Coming off its biggest and most successful year ever, WonderCon is gearing up for its 23rd year as a Bay area tradition. The comics and popular arts convention returns to Moscone Center South for another three-day weekend run on February 27 through March 1. More than 29,000 people attended the show in 2008, and 2009 promises to be another incredible convention experience for fans from all over.

Waltz with Bashir Art Director to Speak Feb. 23

David Polonsky, the art director of the acclaimed Oscar-nominated animated feature WALTZ WITH BASHIR, will talk and show clips from the film at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 at Santa Monica College's Academy of Entertainment & Technology.

His talk will kick off SMC's spring entertainment industry speakers series, called the Mary Pickford Series, which features a wide range of speakers representing virtually all aspects of the business.

Each year the Academy's Foreign Language Film Award Nominees Symposium brings together some of the world's top filmmakers to address such wide-ranging topics as art, politics and the challenges of their profession.

On Saturday, February 21, one day before the 81st Academy Awards, directors of the motion pictures nominated in the Foreign Language Film category will appear onstage to discuss their work. This two-hour event, which always draws an international standing-room-only crowd, will also feature a brief clip from each of the nominated films.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present the Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Symposium, a program spotlighting the work of the 2008 Academy Award nominees in the Makeup category, on Saturday, February 21, at 2:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The program, moderated by Academy governor Leonard Engelman, will feature a discussion of the nominees' creative process as well as present film clips, photographs and models of their work.

Oscar Nominees for Art Direction In Person at the Egyptian Theatre

This year's Academy Award nominated Production Designers and Set Decorators will participate in a panel to discuss their nominated films and what it took to design them on February 21 at 2:30 p.m., the eve of the Academy Awards show, at the Egyptian Theatre (6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood). The Art Directors Guild and the Set Decorators Society of America, in association with the American Cinematheque, are presenting this panel, which will be preceded by excerpts of each nominated film.

NCM Fathom and Bandai Ent. will present SWORD OF THE STRANGER, a samurai anime tale from Japan, on the big screen in a one-night event on Thursday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. local time.

This theatre event (English dubbed) will feature a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the SWORD OF THE STRANGER at studio BONES as well as new interviews with the English voice actors, director Masahiro Ando, and producer Mashiko Minami.

Los Campeones de la Lucha Libre to Screen at Egyptian

A feature-length animated action-comedy from FWAK! Animation, the creators of "MUCHA LUCHA!" will screen at the Egyptian Theater. Masked mayhem ensues when a team of wrestling heroes is caught in the middle of a struggle between a gang of barbarians right out of MAD MAX and a legion of monsters inspired by the golden age of Mexican horror films. A Spanish-language version of this film just ran in theaters throughout Mexico, but American Cinematheque will present the first public screening in Los Angeles of an English-language 35mm print.
