The independent Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts has chosen animation luminaries the Quay Brothers as the recipients of the 2009 Coolidge Award. The prestigious award is given annually to a film artist or artists whose work advances the spirit of original and challenging cinema. Previous honorees are film producer Jeremny Thomas in 2008, film editor Thelma Schoonmaker in 2007, actress Meryl Street in 2006, Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro in 2005 and Chinese director Zhang Yimou in 2004.

Askew's Foods and Pepsi are proud to present the world's largest digital 3-D film festival It Came From The 3d Dimension on the shores of the Shuswap Lake in the interior of British Columbia. This once-in-a-lifetime evening begins with a reception at MoCCA for "The Art of WATCHMEN" exhibition, continues with an advance screening of WATCHMEN, based on the graphic novel co-created and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, and concludes with an author signing of WATCHMEN PORTRAITS by Clay Enos.

Tickets are available online, by visiting or calling MoCCA, Tuesday-Saturday at 212-254-3511. Tickets are $100 or $75 for MoCCA members.

Bitfilm Collection 03 Screening in Tokyo

On Friday, February 27, Bitfilm will present its new Bitfilm Collection 03 in Tokyo. Following successful cinema screenings of the first two Bitfilm Collections in Berlin and Barcelona, this new compilation of outstanding digital animations will be shown to the public in Japan first. By March 3 the Collection 03 will be available online as download-to-own in DVD quality.

At the Super Deluxe Club in Tokyo all three Bitfilm Collections will be screened. Doors will open at 7 p.m., the screenings will start at 8 p.m. The entry fee is 1000 Yen.

Experimental animation was presented as fine art by its creators long before the art world acknowledged William Kentridge's work, the widely-accepted marker to distinguish animation a "legitimate" language in fine art. Looking beyond the constraining nomenclature of cartoon inherited from Sergei Eisenstein and forwarded by Gilles Deleuze and Rosalind Krauss, this panel visits an earlier history of art practice and critical thinking in experimental animation that was passed over by art history and then relegated to film history, where it was equally ignored.
