F5 is a new two-day creativity festival coming to New York City April 16 and 17. F5's eclectic lineup is built around "creative collisions" -- moments of lasting insight and inspiration that come from venturing outside your comfort zone and smashing into other ?elds.
This special media event puts the spotlight on the soundtrack. The independent Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts has chosen animation luminaries the Quay Brothers as the recipients of the 2009 Coolidge Award. The prestigious award is given annually to a film artist or artists whose work advances the spirit of original and challenging cinema. The MFA Computer Art Department at School of Visual Arts, the New York Digital Salon and the Department of Music and Multimedia Studies at Northeastern University present the New York premiere of the Visual Music Marathon, a 12-hour festival showcasing 120 works by contemporary digital artists and composers from around the world. On Monday, March 23, comics writer and critic Danny Fingeroth will give an illustrated presentation about the life, work, and influence of writer and artist Will Eisner.
Taking a tour through Eisner's life-in effect, a journey through comics history-the presentation will serve as an introduction to those who'd like to know more about how the graphic novel phenomenon (which has spawned hit comics-based movies like THE DARK KNIGHT and WATCHMEN), and will offer new insights for those who may already know the work of Eisner and his creative descendants.
Sketch Theatre's first gallery show collects many of the sketches filmed on SketchTheatre.com and puts them on display to finally be admired in person. March 21 opening reception will featuring live figure drawing models, DJ and refreshments.

The American Cinematheque continues its program of one night seminars for filmmakers. The American Cinematheque debuted its Filmmaking Seminars for Filmmakers and other artists in September 2007 with the concept of offering concrete, practical information on a variety of filmmaking, marketing, creative and business practices at a very reasonable cost to the many independent filmmakers working in the Los Angeles area.
The Television Academy of Arts & Sciences together with the Los Angeles Chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH will present a one night only event titled "Emmy Winning VFX". The presentations will feature the Primetime Emmy-winning visual effects employed in BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, JOHN ADAMS and the main title design of MAD MEN.

On Friday, February 27, Bitfilm will present its new Bitfilm Collection 03 in Tokyo. Following successful cinema screenings of the first two Bitfilm Collections in Berlin and Barcelona, this new compilation of outstanding digital animations will be shown to the public in Japan first. By March 3 the Collection 03 will be available online as download-to-own in DVD quality.
At the Super Deluxe Club in Tokyo all three Bitfilm Collections will be screened. Doors will open at 7 p.m., the screenings will start at 8 p.m. The entry fee is 1000 Yen.
Experimental animation was presented as fine art by its creators long before the art world acknowledged William Kentridge's work, the widely-accepted marker to distinguish animation a "legitimate" language in fine art. Looking beyond the constraining nomenclature of cartoon inherited from Sergei Eisenstein and forwarded by Gilles Deleuze and Rosalind Krauss, this panel visits an earlier history of art practice and critical thinking in experimental animation that was passed over by art history and then relegated to film history, where it was equally ignored.
The Cartoon Art Museum's Annual WonderCon Weekend Party will be held on Friday, February 27, 2008, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.. Admission to this ticketed event will be on a sliding scale from $10 to $35, with guests encouraged to contribute whatever they can to support the Cartoon Art Museum. Many of the featured artists and special WonderCon guests will be in attendance, including featured guests WATCHMEN co-creator Dave Gibbons and USAGI YOJIMBO creator Stan Sakai.
Coming off its biggest and most successful year ever, WonderCon is gearing up for its 23rd year as a Bay area tradition. The comics and popular arts convention returns to Moscone Center South for another three-day weekend run on February 27 through March 1.
