differance between cartooning and animation?

hey everyone, i dont really know much about this area, so i was hoping someone could help me out. i wanted to know the differance between cartooning and animation.

True, but that's not what the word "manga" means today, even in Japan.

In terms of anime production, even today most Japanese anime is made using traditional 2D animation techniques. If you want to do things "the anime way," you'll be best off by learning traditional drawing.

Cartoon and Animation

Well my friend, you have come to the right place. Cartooning is more about comics books and cartoons in newspaper and animation is cartoons animate with computers

Hope these helps :D

not all animation is done on a computer. And some cartoons ARE drawn on a computer.

If it moves, and is not created by filming moving objects as they move, it's animation.

thanks

thanks, that was helpful, i wanted to also just expand a bit, im going to be studying animation and really what im trying to figure out is what kinda courses i need to do, i wanna try get into stuff like you see on tv, 2d animation like most japanese anime/manga although i know there are other countries that do the same thing.

this is off topic but if anyone knows what programs are used for 2d anime/manga type animation could you let me know. Thanks

Man - when are people going to start looking through the archives instead of just showing up and asking THE SAME QUESTIONS OVER AND OVER AGAIN?!?!?!?

Yes, everyone has to start somewhere, but make a freakin' effort, people. If what you need to know hasn't already been discussed endlessly, THEN ask the question.

BTW, this is not one of those questions...

Incidentally, there is no 'A' in 'difference.' You learn something new every day, right?

Hi Sharingan_Kaden and welcome to the forums.

First off, anime is japanesse for animation. Manga is japanesse for comics. While they often do overlap in the stories told and characters involved, they are not the same.

If you want to get into 2D animation or drawing Manga, (comics) you don't need to learn any computer programs. The classes you need to take are life drawing classes. Lots and lots of life drawing classes. On top of the life drawing classes, go out with a sketchbook and sketch people from life. Then start to taking traditional 2D animation classes. NOT computer animation classes, but classes where you actually draw ever frame of movement and shoot it under a camera. You will learn animation quicker and better if you do it traditionally than if you were to take computer classes. Besides, almost everyschool that teaches 3D computer animation makes you take a bunch of begining classes where they teach you character modeling, character rigging, lighting, then at the very end animation. And usually by the time you get to the animation classes, they don't even teach you character animation.

So yeah, draw a lot. I hope that helps you out some, and good luck on your journey into the world of animation.

P.S. Also taking film classes doesn't hurt.

Okay, to humor the ones that asked: the differences between cartooning and animation.

Cartooning is a form of illustration--typically using a simplified form of rendering and structure, but not exclusively.
Animation is a medium that uses cartooning as one of its genres, but again, not exclusively.
Animation and cartooning are an ideal pairing because the abrupt form of illustration that is cartooning works well in Animation, as almost every frame needs movement represented.
Animation is not limited to cartooning because there are other kinds of animation--such as stop-motion, pixelation, CGI and other kinds.
I hope this answers things.

i wanted to know the differance [SIC] between cartooning and animation.

im [SIC] going to be studying animation and really what im [SIC] trying to figure out is what kinda [SIC] courses i need to do

My general advice is to find out what a word means before you commit to taking a series of courses devoted to that word.

For example, if you don't understand what the word "molecule" means, then it's probably too early to commit to a career in molecular biology.

If you don't yet understand what the words "animation" and "cartoon" mean, then - by all means - take the extra 5 minutes to crack open your neighborhood dictionary.

Manga is japanesse for comics

A strict translation of Manga would be more like whimsical scetches, or irrisponsible drawing.
