hey what's some good software for just doing straight up rasterized animation? I don't want to make vectorized animations... it seems difficult to find just a straight forward, non-vector based, reliable animation program. I want to achieve a look of the maxx/original ghost in the shell ... what software would be used for that? Everything i've looked at lately seems to be all about vector this vector that and doesn't have much info on it's non-vector options.

I would suggest :
TVPaint Animation
wow great! just out of curiosity what was the standard software people used in the 90s before flash took over the market?
There were a number of digital Ink & Paint systems in use for coloring and compositing traditional hand-drawn animation in the 90's . A popular one was Animo from Cambridge Animation Systems (Animo was in use at Dreamworks and Warner Bros. features ). Disney of course had their proprietary CAPS system . Other digital Ink & Paint programs included USAnimation (eventually turned into ToonBoom Opus) , RETAS, Toonz, Digicel, CTP Pro from Crater Software .
Most of these are still being used .
When you mentioned rastar-based animation vs. vector I assumed you were talking about drawing directly into the program with a Wacom tablet. TVPaint Animation is ideal for paperless animation. (although TVPaint also has the option of scanning in traditional pencil on paper drawings for coloring ... TVpaint is an all-in-one drawing/painting/animation/ink&paint program).
I've used Animo and I liked it, but it was very expensive at the time. Not sure about these days.
For the little bit of 2d work I do, I like Digicel. Very affordable and has a lot of features.

yeah, i definately like the hands on with paper, also i'm just starting out and i won't have enough money at any one time to afford one of those $3000 tablet things so.. paper is the only option for me at this time.
