Creature designer Aaron Sims will be making several appearances in conjunction with the 2008 SIGGRAPH conference and exhibition. Sims will divulge his creative process to hundreds of SIGGRAPH attendees representing all facets of the industry as well as members of the media. In addition, one of his most compelling pieces of work to date will be revealed during a VIP event introducing the RabbitHoles hologram exhibition at 7:30 p.m. on August 12 at Hollywood's Gnomon Gallery, located at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects.
RabbitHoles 3D motion holograms utilize a revolutionary printing system that results in a flat surface display of 3D imagery encompassing ten seconds of animation. It must be seen to be believed -- and Sims' piece "Thorn" is perfect for such a dynamic medium. Director of Creative Affairs Veta Bates said, "We chose to work with Aaron because his portfolio has already made an impressive impact on the entertainment industry and common culture." Limited numbers of Sims print will be on sale during the exhibition.
Combined with the RabbitHoles exhibit (which marks the grand opening of the Gnomon Gallery), the evening's event will celebrate top software company Pixologic's annual user meeting and the 10th anniversary of the Gnomon School of Visual Effects'. Sims will present his technical prowess and artistic insight as a guest of honor at this gathering of cutting-edge artists, film leaders and technology innovators. On August 13, Sims goes in-depth into his style during a presentation on XSI software at the Softimage booth on SIGGRAPH's exhibition floor at 2 p.m. Sims will be on hand after both presentations to answer questions and sign autographs.
In December, audiences will get their next dose of eye candy from Sims in THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, where his work will bring the classic man-vs.-aliens story up to date.
Sims has also pioneered a technique streamlining the visual effects process that's changing how movies are made, resulting in exponentially more efficient and higher quality effects production. The ASC process has been used to great success in both THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR, with much more to come.
For more than 20 years, Sims has working alongside directors like Andrew Adamson, David Goyer, Francis Lawrence, Louis Leterrier, Joel Schumacher, Barry Sonnenfeld, Steven Spielberg and Chris Weitz. As a protege of both Rick Baker and Stan Winston, Sims' work reflects the mastery of these talents while his own innovation consistently brings creature design and visual effects to new, never-before-seen levels.
