Axis Studios Shuts its Doors, Lays Off 162 Employees

The Glasgow-based animation and VFX studio has stopped all production and been put into administration after becoming insolvent; restructuring firm Interpath Advisory will locate companies to continue any current projects in development.

Axis Studios, the Glasgow-based animation and VFX company that boasts work on series, films, and video games for huge clients, including the BBC and Netflix, has gone into administration due to an inability to pay debts. The UK insolvency procedure, much like bankruptcy, has forced all production to halt and 162 of 166 workers to be laid off. Company inquiries by AWN have not been returned.

According to the BBC, Alistair McAlinden, a joint administer and head of restructuring firm Interpath Advisory in Scotland, said it was a "great shame to see a creative business in Scotland close its doors. Axis has more recently been impacted by a decline in customer projects, as well as increases in labor costs which have resulted in severe cash flow problems. The directors worked tirelessly to explore alternative solutions, but ultimately had to take the difficult decision to seek the appointment of administrators.”

McAlinden noted that a decline in projects and increased labor costs were the reason for the studio’s money issues. Interpath will handle the administration as well as help locate other companies to continue current projects in development.

Axis, which was founded in 2000, is known for its work on Our Girl, LEGO: City Adventures, and the animated music video for the League of Legends song “More.” In June 2023, the studio teamed with Hungary’s DIGIC to co-develop and co- produce the family film Worlds Apart
