The ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ director has been onboarded by Paramount, Bad Robot, and Toho to adapt the animated romantic fantasy drama, considered a modern Japanese classic.
Another live-action anime adaptation is in the works! This time, Carlos López Estrada (Raya and the Last Dragon, Blindspotting) will rewrite and direct the adaptation of the modern Japanese classic Your Name, an animated romantic fantasy drama originally produced by CoMix Wave Films, directed by Makoto Shinkai (Weathering with You and the upcoming Suzume), and distributed by Toho in 2016. However, Estrada is not the first to pen a script or take the film’s director’s chair; Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Bird Box), tried his hand at writing the preliminary version, while Marc Webb (Snow White, 500 Days of Summer) was originally announced as director.
Estrada is an Academy Award and DGA- nominated filmmaker, as well as a Latin Grammy winner for his direction on a Jesse & Joy animated music video. He is currently developing an animated documentary film as well as a live-action adaptation of Disney’s Robin Hood.
In the original Your Name anime film, two high school teens discover an ability to swap bodies and must work together to prevent disaster. These core themes will remain in the adaptation, but further plot details are not yet known.
The film is currently in development from powerhouse team Paramount, Bad Robot, and Toho. Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams will produce alongside Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen, with Genki Kawamura, who produced the original. Toho will again distribute the film in Japan while Paramount will release the picture in the U.S. and all other international territories.
