On Saturday May 13, 2000, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences handed out their Daytime Emmy Awards for technical achievement. Many of the awards handed out featured animated series like big winner ROLIE POLIE OLIE for best special class animated program. The 3D animation series beat out ANGELA ANACONDA, BATMAN BEYOND, DISNEYS MICKEY MOUSEWORKS and THE SYLVESTER & TWEETY MYSTERIES for the honor. BLUES CLUES lost to BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY in the childrens series writing category and lost to BEAR IN THE BIG BLUE HOUSE in the childrens series directing category. However, the blue dog still has a chance for outstanding pre-school series when the remaining awards are handed out on Friday, May 19, 2000. Composers Richard Stone, Steve Bernstein, Julie Bernstein, Tim Kelly and Gordon Goodwin of HISTERIA! edged out BATMAN BEYOND and THE NEW BATMAN/SUPERMAN ADVENTURES composers for the outstanding music direction and composition award. ROUGHNECKS STARSHIP TROOPERS CHRONICLES won for outstanding achievement in sound editing special class over animated series BATMAN BEYOND, DISNEYS HERCULES, HISTERIA! and THE NEW BATMAN/SUPERMAN ADVENTURES. Taking the honors for outstanding achievement in sound mixing special class was ARTHUR, beating BATMAN BEYOND, MEN IN BLACK and THE NEW BATMAN/SUPERMAN ADVENTURES. The prize for outstanding performer in an animated program went to James Wood in DISNEYS HERCULES. The other nominees in the category were French Stewart (DISNEYS HERCULES), Pam Grier (THE EMPRESS NIGHTINGALE - HAPPILY EVER AFTER: FAIRY TALES FOR EVERY CHILD), Robert Guillaume (THE EMPRESS NIGHTINGALE - HAPPILY EVER AFTER: FAIRY TALES FOR EVERY CHILD) and Nathan Lane (GEORGE AND MARTHA). Still vying for the outstanding childrens animated program is ARTHUR, DISNEYS DOUG, MAURICE SENDAKS LITTLE BEAR, THE NEW BATMAN/SUPERMAN ADVENTURES and STEVEN SPIELBERG PRESENTS: PINKY, ELMYRA AND THE BRAIN, which will be given out with the rest of the awards airing at 9 pm on ABC.
