Summit Ent. is venturing into the comic book adaptation arena with the acquisition of WildStorm/DC Comics' RED, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.
Brothers Erich and Jon Hoeber are penning the script for the action film, which will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and his longtime exec Mark Vahradian. This marks the first time a DC Comics title won't be produced by parent company Time Warner.
DC is however remaining active in this adaptation. DC SVP of Creative Affairs Gregory Noveck will serve as exec producer and will oversee RED.
RED is a three-issue comic series, first published in 2003. It follows a former black-ops CIA agent living a quiet life in retirement until a high-tech assassin shows up with the intent to kill him. With his secret identity blown and his love interest in danger, the man assembles his old team to figure out who is after them. Warren Ellis, whose other comic OCEAN is set up at Warner Bros., wrote RED with illustrations by Cully Hamner.
The Hoeber brothers' take involves the idea of an older operative set in his ways having to deal with younger and more fit agents as well as modern techniques and technology.
It took about two years of wrangling to remove RED from Warner Bros. Di Bonaventura is in production on G.I. JOE and is producing TRANSFORMERS 2 with Don Murphy and Tom De Santo.
The Hoebers most recently wrote WHITEOUT, a comic adaptation starring Kate Beckinsale due out later this year. They also worked on THE PACT for Working Title and ALICE for Universal.
Summit President of Production Erik Feig and Summit SVP of Production Geoff Shaevitz will oversee RED for the studio.
