The studio’s second round of staff cuts in less than six months ‘were across corporate functions, feature, television and technology departments as part of an overall cost-reduction.’
“DreamWorks Animation reduced its workforce by approximately 70 positions,” a DreamWorks spokesperson told AWN. “Roles affected were across corporate functions, feature, television and technology departments as part of an overall cost-reduction.”
The news comes after the company laid off 33 employees in May, a 2% workforce reduction at the time, with a similar explanation of an “overall cost-reduction plan across all studios.” The cuts are part of an ongoing trend across the entertainment industry this year, including downsizing and cost-cutting efforts from Disney, Electronic Arts, and Epic Games , resulting in thousands of job losses.
The layoffs come at an odd time for the studio, which has realized recent theatrical successes with The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The studio also has multiple promising upcoming projects, including high-earning franchise offerings Trolls: Band Together and Kung Fu Panda 4.
With two rounds of layoffs in less than six months, we hope there’s not a third around the corner.
