As part of its Oscar push, Warner Bros. will re-release Gravity nationwide on Friday, January 17, according to a report by The Wrap.
The 3D space epic, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, will return to theaters one day after the Oscar nominations are announced. On that same day, Paramount will be releasing Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Open Road Films will debut its first animated film The Nut Job, Universal is opening the comedy Ride Along and Fox is rolling out the horror film Devil’s Due. All will be nationwide releases.
Since its debut in October, Gravity has made $255 million at the domestic box office and $415 million internationally for a worldwide total of $670 million.
The Visual Effects Society named Cuarón the recipient of its Visionary Award in December, followed by a Producers Guild nomination for Best Picture and the director’s first DGA nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement. The Academy’s annual VFX bakeoff, to be held on Thursday, will determine if Gravity also receives a nomination for Best Visual Effects.
