Hiroyuki Sanada, Takashi Yamazaki Receive Special VES Awards

Actor/producer Sanada is honored with the VES Award for Creative Excellence, while FX supervisor/filmmaker Yamazaki receives the VES Visionary Award; both will be presented at the 23rd Annual VES Awards on February 11, 2025.

The Visual Effects Society has named Hiroyuki Sanada the recipient of the VES Award for Creative Excellence and Takashi Yamazaki the recipient of the VES Visionary Award.

Sanada is recognized for his exceptional roles in Japanese and Hong Kong action films and dramatic cinema, and his impact as a cultural ambassador for Japan. The creative is touted as one of Japan’s most celebrated actors; his work as a producer and actor in FX’s Shōgun led to him becoming the first Japanese actor to win a Primetime Emmy Award. He has also appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4, Bullet Train, Army of the Dead, Mortal Kombat and Minamata.

“Hiroyuki Sanada has been at the center point of compelling cinematic stories that use visual effects to enhance unforgettable storytelling for decades,” said Kim Davidson, VES Chair. “As a longtime adviser for Hollywood films to ensure authentic depictions of Japanese history to serving as the creative force behind juggernaut drama Shōgun, Sanada’s work has left an indelible mark on the global cultural landscape. We are thrilled to honor him with the VES Award for Creative Excellence!”

Yamazaki is recognized for his artistry, expansive storytelling and innovative use of visual effects to bring his unique visions to life. Yamazaki is a renowned talent in Japanese cinema, who became the second director to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One. The filmmaker is set to make his Hollywood debut with Grandgear for Bad Robot and Sony Pictures.

“Takashi Yamazaki is a renowned talent in Japanese cinema, who accomplished a significant feat when he became only the second director to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and in the process reinvigorated a legendary kaiju franchise,” Davidson remarked.  “Yamazaki has been at the forefront in using visual effects to tell remarkable stories that transfix audiences and create unforgettable cinematic experiences.   As a creative force who has made an indelible mark in the world of filmed entertainment, we are honored to award him with the prestigious VES Visionary Award.”

Both awards will be presented at the 23rd Annual VES Awards on February 11, 2025 at The Beverly Hilton hotel.
