Italian-French co-production ‘Iqbal: Tale of a Fearless Child’ wins Pulcinella Award for Best Animated Feature; Switzerland’s ‘Ariadne’s Thread,’ directed by Claude Luyet, wins Best Animated Short.
Winners have been announced for the 2017 edition of Cartoons on the Bay, Italy’s long-running international cross-media animation and children’s television festival and conference, which ran April 6-8 in the city of Turin.
The Awards Gala held on Sunday night wrapped up three days of screenings, workshops and competitions with a focus on guest country Japan.
Italian-French co-production Iqbal: Tale of a Fearless Child brought home the Pulcinella Award for Best Animated Feature, while Switzerland’s Ariadne’s Thread, directed by Claude Luyet, won the award for Best Animated Short.

- Best Preschool TV Series: YoYo (Rai Fiction, Show Lab, Grid Animation, Telegael; Italy/Ireland)
- Bet Kids TV Series: OddBods (One Animation; Singapore)
- Best Teens TV Series: Ant Gets Married (Animoon; Poland)
- Best Interactive Animation: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo; Japan)
- Best Live-Action/Hybrid TV Series: Big World of Little Worries (Vivement Lundi!; France)
- Best TV Pilot: Selfie (Savoir-Fer; France)
- Best Short Film: Ariadne’s Thread, directed by Claude Luyet (Studio GDS, Luyet; Switzerland)
- Best Animated Feature Film: Iqbal: Tale of a Fearless Child, directed by Michel Fuzellier & Babak Payami (Gertie, 2d3D, Montparnasse; Italy/France)
Also handed out was the Career Achievement Award, which honored Japanese filmmaker Taku Furukawa, the Studio of the Year Award, given to Japan’s CoMix Wave, and three Special Awards given to esteemed Japanese animation directors Koji Yamamura and Shinichiro Watanabe and Valhalla Game Studios CTO Tomonobu Itagaki.
