‘Loving Vincent’ Racks Up EFA Honor, Box Office

Indie feature passes the $20 million worldwide mark.

‘Loving Vincent’ won the European Animated Feature of the Year honor at the European Film Awards.

The animated feature Loving Vincent won the European Animated Feature of the Year honor Dec. 9 at the European Film Awards.

The film’s box office has passed the $20 million mark -- a rare feat for an independent animated feature -- thanks to a solid opening this past weekend in China, earning more than $1 million on its first day of release, according to Variety.

A Poland-U.K. coproduction, Loving Vincent has done particularly well in Poland and in North America, where it’s grossed $5.8 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, the movie brings the paintings of artist Vincent van Gogh to life in telling his story. Every frame of the movie is a hand-crafted oil painting. The film has earned rave reviews since its debut at Annecy.
