Luxo's L-1 Task Light Inspires Design For Wall-E

Pixar's anticipated hit movie, WALL-E, whose main character is the last robot on Earth, was inspired by Luxo's iconic L-1 task light.

In a recent interview, Wall-E director Andrew Stanton, who also directed Pixar's Academy-Award winning FINDING NEMO, noted that the combination of the L-1 and a pair of binoculars served as an inspiration for WALL-E. "Luxo was always an inspiration because of all the life it gave an inanimate object," Stanton said.

The new movie is coming out at the same time Luxo has introduced the next generation of task lighting: the Ninety. One of the most innovative task lighting products ever to come on the market, this recent Best of NeoCon Gold Award-winning lamp features cutting-edge technology with sustainable attributes, better lighting ergonomics and a modern, chic design.

Ninety is the world's most energy efficient task light. Its four high-power LEDs use just 1.4 watts each and have a 45,000-hour life span. That equates to 25 years of normal office use -- meaning you won't have to change the light source for an entire generation.

"Much as the L-1 set the standard for design and lighting ergonomics, the new Ninety takes all these positive components, adds outstanding energy efficiencies and packages it in a sleek design," said Luxo President Sam Gumins. "Who knows, maybe Pixar's next film will star the Ninety."

Since 1986, the L-1 has been linked with Pixar as the subject of its first animated short, LUXO JR. The trademark lamp is featured in a giant display on Pixar's campus in Emeryville, California and appears before each of its films.

At the 2007 Comic-Con, advanced footage showed the Pixar opening logo sequence with Luxo Jr.'s burned out bulb and Wall-E rolling in to take its place -- then Luxo transforms into the Pixar logo.

Another key design element in the film came from another iconic source: Apple. According to FORTUNE magazine, Stanton's other robot Eve (WALL-E's love interest) is a sleek, modern and pod-like droid that looks very much like she was born in Apple's design room. This is more than just a coincidence, as Eve marks the first collaboration with Steve Jobs' Apple-Pixar-Disney vision, where Apple's design leader Jonathan Ive was involved on a consultative basis.

Well known in the industry for more than 70 years, Luxo is committed to supplying the right light through ergonomic and energy-efficient lighting solutions. For more information about Ninety and Luxo visit www.luxous.com.
